Although we only stopped in for a short time in May of 1997, we managed to get a look at the Sawyer's Pit at Colonial Williamsburg, in Virginia. A good look at everything at Colonial Williamsburg required several days at least as there are sites to see that aren't right in Willimasburg, and the old town area is so interesting you can't do it all in a day.
Here is a shot of the top man of the team. He does the lifting of the blade. It is a great deal of work and gives me renewed appreciation for my old bandsaw.
This is a shot of the bottom man. You can get a better sense of the layout of the area here. Although the timber is up on a frame, you can see the trough worn by the movement of the lower man. For those of you with allergies, this picture may cause nightmares. At least the dust is moist as it falls as the log is not dried. Does that make a difference? My sinuses are cynical!
More information about visiting this and other interesting exhibits can be found at the Colonial Williamsburg web site. It is a well done site but be careful, it is very large and you can get lost!
