Life is good! Work wood!

The Cabinet Shop

The cabinet shop at Colonial Williamsburg, VA is always a busy place. I myself spent quite some time there as there is so much to look at and study, even though it is situated in such a small building.

Here is a shot of the bench area in the cabinet shop. I feel this picture gives you a real feel for the atmosphere in the small room. Large windows supply an ample amount of sunlight that rakes across the benches. You may wonder how one can do without electrical lighting but this shop needs none.

Here are some very nice legs waiting to become part of a piece of period furniture. Here you can see work in progress at the bench. The cabinet maker was kind enought to allow me to take his picture as he carefully cut a joint in some fine hardwood.

One of these days I am going to write a book about lathe construction. Not that I am the best turner, far from it in fact, but I have always wanted to build a treadle lathe and I have done so much research on the subject that it keeps coming up in everything I do. Here is a shot of the lathe at Colonial Williamsburg.

More information about visiting this and other interesting exhibits can be found at the Colonial Williamsburg web site. It is a well done site but be careful, it is very large and you can get lost!
