Happy Easter Woodworking!

A Reader Responds:

Every once in a while, a letter comes along that makes me remember why I do this. Woodworking is a catharsis for me, a refuge from the trials and tribulations of modern life. It's not that I believe everyone can, or even should have the same interests, but if there is someone else out there that needs an outlet for creative energy - or something to get their mind off of their troubles, then I would like to communicate my love of this pursuit to them. Tony Morrison must have found some value in it as this letter can attest to, but more importantly it is evident in the lovely sign project he made. Here is his letter. Please scroll down to see the beautiful sign he made.

Subject: Thank You!

Greetings Howard,

I am an absolute newbie when it comes to working with wood. I would see things made of wood and wish that I could do something like that. Well, it started this past summer when I had to replace a fence along the side of our yard. I did it..me...all by myself. Although it certainly isn't the straightest structure you have ever seen, it keeps the dog in the yard. I have never used a table saw or even a power circular saw before that. I was satisfied with this project and thought that I could do some other things with wood. I got on the internet and found your website. You have been an inspiration. Specifically, your "hand carved sign" project. Your steps made it sound do-able, so I gave it a try. I decide to make a sign for one of my best friends, my black Labrador retriever, "Stormy."

I had never used a router or chisel before. I didn't have a router, so rather than spending a couple hundred $$ on a new one, I spent about $30 and got the router attachment for my Dremel. I realize it isn't powerful enough for many projects but I thought it worked well for this one and was a good place to start. I used a piece of maple. Wow, that's hard wood. I have included a picture of my sign. I was very pleased with the results. BUT, there is a problem... Now I want to make more stuff! I want to buy more tools! My wife wonders what has gotten' into me. I tell her, "Howard, got me started." She hates you, by the way (hee hee).

When I go into Home Depot, I spend most of my time looking at tools and wood. I discovered a new store that's only about 5 minutes from my house. Perhaps you have heard of it: Lee Valley Tools ;) It's been here for years but I was only in it for the first time about 3 weeks ago. I have been reading different books and lurking on rec.woodworking. Until a month or so ago, I probably would have guessed that Mortise & Tenon were opera singers. So, am I now stuck, or is there a cure for woodworkingitis?

Thanks for taking the time to share your skills. Great website.

Best regards,
Tony Morrison
