| Let me first begin by saying that I will be covering a lot of ground here. It is important to realize that I will be revisiting each of these subjects in far greater detail later. For now, the goal is to outline the factors to be considered when you decide to customize your shop.
Changes to your space fall into four categories: services, environment, access and storage. Services are your utilities. This is an oversimplification but it is descriptive. Environment deals with the creature comforts and other factors which directly affect the woodworker. Access involves moving goods and people in and out of the shop. Finally storage is storage. You need a place to put your stuff.
This is not a guide to shop layout. That may, in fact come later, depending on how much time I devote to this web site. These are important issues that you must consider as you design your shop. My shop is in my garage. Even as we were picking out house designs I knew it would be in my garage. That means that there isn’t a time since we decided to build that I haven’t been considering these issues, and planning and changing plans. That is the nature of it. I knew what I would settle for as a minimum, and made sure there was enough expandability in place to ensure I could change my mind if I needed or wanted to.
This is a relatively large area of discussion so I have broken it into three separate web pages. You can hit your browser's back button to come back to the following menu or follow the added links at the top and bottom of each of the three sub-pages.
