Problem Solving 101 - The Solution

Remember that face edge that had the defects? I had to make a hard decision - which did I hate the most? Discoloration or the defects? I chose discoloration so for a solution I decided to run the board through the saw, face side down and face edge to the fence, with the fence set to just cut off the discolored part. I hoped that there would be enough wood left on the face edge that when I ran the board through again, this time with the fence set at the finished width plus a 16th of an inch, that after re-jointing the face edge the blemishes would be gone. (I added a 16th to the finished width so I could plane a 32nd off each edge.) I was able to get rid of the discoloration and some of the blemishes on the face edge, but the board didn’t turn out perfect. Oh well, what is that saying about perfect only counting in horse shoes?
