2009

12/15/2009A post I read in the forums sparked me to complete this update I have been working regarding changes in the woodshop. Click here to read about it and see the copious quantity of photos. Whew, that's a long update. I don't think I'll have the energy for another one for a while.
12/14/2009It has been a busy year, and next year promises to be more so. I am proud to say that I am spending much more time in the shop. I have to in order to stay sane. I have not had so much time for updating the website. There are lots of new projects and plans in the works, but I may not have time to tell you about them. However, after recently noticing all the changes to the microshop, I had to show you the changes. It is a great little shop. Click here to see the changes.
05/10/2009One of the first projects I ever placed on this website - even before I came up with the inthewoodshop.org domain - was about my small routered boxes. In that page I alluded to a router box jig that I used to make them. Over the years, I have received countless emails asking about the jig so I finally got around to writing about it. Click here to read about Making Small Boxes With The Router Box Jig.
05/08/2009After carving signs for other people for years, I finally carved one for myself. Click here to read about, and see, the sign I carved for my microshop. If you wish to carve your own sign, the article includes patterns for your use.
05/06/2009Every so often I get questions about where the plans come from for my projects. The simple answer is a rough sketch or story stick - I don't really use plans. I have been asked so often about the coffee table in my projects section that I finally broke down and wrote up a plan. Click here to read about the Trestle Coffee Table Plan. I hope you enjoy it, dear reader.
05/02/2009I was recently approached by Krylon to review their new Exterior Wood Stain Spray Click here for the inital page explaining the project I am building to test this product. Once completed, this information will be replaced with the review and I will be adding the plan for the project to my projects section.
04/13/2009After having made a number of changes to my woodshop, the changes to my Tour the Woodshop section became too many. As a result, I completely overhauled it and added a floorplan, as there is always someone interested in that sort of thing. Click here for the upgraded tour of the woodshop.
04/12/2009I found a diagram of the layout of my 6th shop. Here is is. The diagram was made in 2004 but I can't remember doing it. It is a nice one so I just had to include it.
03/29/2009As a companion to the Quick and Dirty Saw Till, I felt compelled to write a few words about The 7 Saws to Success. Yes, it is a silly name but it just appeared out of nowhere and I just had to run with it. My apologies.
03/29/2009It was only a matter of time before Mr. Quick And Dirty Returns With A Saw Till. Need I say more?
03/28/2009As yet another fine woodworking website is swallowed up and lost, probably replaced by another one of those silly tool review websites, so too is one of the simple, useful jigs that it contained. At the request of a reader, I have created my own version of Ralph Brendler's scraper jointing jig web page so that this effective little jig will continue on.
03/28/2009Even with work getting in the way, I have been making sawdust and the microshop has changed, although not that much. Here is an update anyway.
03/07/2009It had been an interesting and busy winter and one of main problems has been to find a way to heat the microshop. Read here about how I used radiant heat to finally make the microshop cozy and warm, even at -40°.
01/01/2009Oops! I was doing my start of a new year housekeeping and I noticed that in the few months since I changed to my new web host, no-one complained to me that they could not download the Easyshop software on my software page. That has now been fixed. It was a minor oversight and I offer my apologies.

2008

12/28/2008This message is more of a courtesy than anything else. Several years ago I started some cyclone dust collector pages that, every time I move hosts (as I have done recently), or make other changes, always seem to end up being reposted. I have, permanently I hope, removed them. Sorry to those who were interested - my increasing slant towards Neanderthal-style woodworking has changed my mind about having one. You never know, however, things might change.
10/19/2008After updating my microshop tour, I just had to put this page together. Visit my Projects section and read about the construction of my new tool till where I keep my essential hand tools close th the work area.
10/19/2008The microshop, as it has come to be known, is changing every day. Tour the Woodshop to see all the new chnges, especially regarding tool storage.
08/06/2008I recently visited the James McDonald Carpentry Shop at Fort Edmonton Park in Edmonton, Alberta. I can't tell you how surprised I was to find a world class woodworking shop display so close to home.
08/05/2008Many people contact me from all over the world. It's really quite fantastic. Sometimes I can reply quickly, other times it may take a while - depending on how busy I am. I do, however, try to respond to all my mail. Unfortunately, sometimes the response is blocked because my address has, in some instances, been flagged as spam. I am no spammer but my address has been usurped by spammers. Due to difficulties like this, I have had to add an email page that alerts senders to the difficulties, rather than a direct link to email. My apologies for any inconvenience.
07/31/2008Sometimes the best tools are as low tech as you can get. My Box is the perfect example of a site built tool that has become indispensible.
07/31/2008Fine woodworking has not been on my menu for the past little while but home renovation has. Find out what I keep in my Basic Renovator's Tool Kit.
07/29/2008Finally - shop #7 is available to tour in Tour the Woodshop. I also updated my Past Woodshops page.
07/29/2008Being on vacation, I have taken some time to update my links pages and other things. New articles to follow.
07/28/2008Well, well. It has been a long time hasn't it. Time flies when you are very busy. For those of my faithful readers (and judging from my unwavering stats there are some) that have been wondering if I am shutting things down, I have to admit I was on the verge of it recently. I have been busy with construction related projects for over three years and I have had no time for woodworking. While the construction is not complete, I am taking a break and slowing down. My tools have been in storage - and there is a horrid story behind that that will follow - but a new micro shop has just been completed and am I starting a new tool cabinet project. A new, larger shop should be up by the spring of 2009 and that will prove to be a fascinating story. I won't let you in on the secret just yet but it is sure to end up as the topic of discussion on a few forums. For those of you that visit and continue to return, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope to reward your patience in the very near future.

And by the way, the CGI scripts that run the survey, library, and comment screens have finally been fixed since my move to HostPapa nearly two years ago. Talk about frustrating.

2006

07/28/2006After several years of email I finally added A Plan for the Contractor's Toolcase.
03/10/2006A lot of web sites have reviews so I try to limit mine. However, sometimes I just can't shut up about a product. Click here to read about Klingspor’s Sandflex® Blocks.
02/20/2006I have received a lot of email asking if I have quit adding to the site. I suppose I have for the last while. Since moving back to Canada, life has become exceptionally busy and I haven't had a proper workshop to work in. That should change shortly and I have quite a few ideas on the back burner. Between working as a renovation contractor and a teacher, I have managed to begin putting together a new shop and I will write more about that soon. In the meantime, here is an article I began writing before the move. I already had the photos (which you will notice are from my old shop in NJ) so I decided to complete it. Click here to read my latest In The Woodshop tool trick - the Water Stone Sled.

2005

03/14/2005My version of the venerable Niddy Noddy added to the Projects section.
03/14/2005Curly Maple Rolling Pin added to the Projects section.
03/12/2005Making A Case for Hide Glue: I've had this one sitting around for three years and I originally intended it for publication in a magazine. However, I was too scared to send it. It's been burning a hole in the desk long enough - maybe I'll be able to submit the next article.
03/12/2005In response to a reader's request, I prepared The Chisel and Gouge Primer to provide some very basic information about these two, indispensable tools.
03/12/2005After what seems like an indefinite hiatus, I offer this article entitled The Evolution of a Home Woodworking Shop. As I set about designing a new shop, I decided to write this look into the evolution of the shop I just left.

04/20/2004Although it's blatant commercialism, it's for a good cause. I've been working on this project for a few months now and I finally uploaded my Support Inthewoodshop.Org page. Bandwidth isn't free yet, unfortunately, but asking you to donate money sounds odd. I mean, I'm not trying to cure a disease here. So, in exchange for your support you receive a lovely, 15 oz. Board Foot Calculator mug from which you can quaff copious quantities of your favorite woodworking beverage while planning out that next project.
04/05/2004Learn how to Sharpen Your Cabinet Scrapers.
