Until I began watching the New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram, I had no idea whatsoever what an adirondack chair was. After having seen his I recalled seeing a few like it... somewhere. You see, Western Canada is as far removed from the Adirondacks as you can get. However, I fell in love with the chair.
In 1990, the year the episode aired, I built my first set out of straight grain fir and painted them white. Here is a shot of them in the backyard of my old house. I used Norm's basic overall idea, but made a few modifications to suit the material I was working with (which was 4/4 material instead of 3/4) and my own personal preferences.
Here is another picture of the chairs slightly from not as great a distance. I regret not photographing the chairs and the process of making them, but at least I have these photos, since I left the chairs behind when I moved. Sniff, sniff.
Almost as soon as they were finished they were a hit with everyone who saw them. Over the years I made many of these chairs, mostly out of western red cedar. Now that's a smell that I'll take in the shop anytime!
