Custom Bathroom Cabinet

This project is the object of a lesson learned. In the early 1990's I tried my hand at being a professional woodworker. I probably started out as many do, by people offering to pay me for my services - people I already know. This cabinet was one such case, and in retrospect is probably responsible, at least in part, for my position on making your hobby a profession. That is another story and you can read about it here.

The cabinet was a custom fit job for a strangely shaped bathroom that had a steam register in the corner (hence the extension off of the right side). This would require special consideration of the building codes - another aspect of the job that took up valuable time. Here is a picture of the finished cabinet. Okay, that one is a little blurry, so here is another one. Finally here is a shot of the cabinet showing the doors and drawers open.

The doors and drawer fronts are all hand made (most cabinet shops buy them from suppliers now, and even then), and special consideration had to be given for the location so a standard cabinet would not have worked. Considering the extra time and effort I put in to verify the building codes, I still had a mandate to beat the price for a stock cabinet, of lesser quality found in Sears. I was paid $400 for that cabinet, and I lost money on the deal. I guess I was too hungry for the work.
