Trestle Coffee Table

Here is another early project I have been dragging around for years, although it is in dire need of being refinished. I built this coffee table in the mid eighties for a house I rented with my wife, I think. It has served us so well that we still use it. I have every intention of replacing it but it isn't too bad looking, and is solid, so we haven't really bothered yet. Here is a picture with my daughter.

The table top is a purchased pine glue-up. This picture is a bit more of a close-up. I didn't have much for tools when I built it. All of the cutting was done with a straight edge and a circular saw. The table edge is a very cheesy routed edge that, if I refinish it for the basement or something, will be redone. The basic design was taken from a book called Classic American Furniture by a writer called Clapper.

At the time I surely didn't have the fancy tools I have now so I had to cut out the legs with a jigsaw. I them taped them together top and bottom, and used a Dremel and some files to smoothe the edges. If anyone tells you that you need an oscilllating drum sander, they just haven't learned the pleasure of a good file yet. I used a hand saw to cut the joinery and a drill and chisel to do the mortising. Here is a shot from the side, although there is a music stand in the way.

It is a timeless design and has served us well.
