Although not that recent anymore, this was on our previous website (ver. 2.80) so I thought I would leave it on. After making the big cross continent move, we were now short of dining room chairs. We didn't have room to bring the rather old, and frankly cheap and crappy previous ones with us. Enter the unfinished furniture store.
We didn't have these back home so it was rather neat to go looking at all the unfinished furniture you could get. Now, the quality is not of the highest and all of the furniture is pine. Well, some oak plywood shelves were available. However, we found some beech windsor chairs that looked rather nice and were of fairly good quality.
We acquired the first two before I had a shop out here so they were finished on a tarp in our apartment dining room. Others were finished in the shop. I wiped on several coats of a dark red Behr stain from Home Depot (I still don't remember the color name) and followed that with 3 coats of Carver Tripp gloss poyurethane. They turned out not too badly.
Sometime later we discovered that the expensive Windsor chairs that my brother and his wife purchased at the fancy furniture store (for who knows how much money) were exactly identical to our $70 unfinished chairs. We could tell from the factory markings underneath. Exact matches. I would hate to know how much they paid each for them.
