Happy Easter Woodworking!

Krylon's Exterior Wood Stain Spray

Recently, I was approached to review Krylon Exterior Wood Stain Spray so I jumped at the chance. Krylon has long been my spray paint of choice and this seemed like a unique product and a unique opportunity. After responding to the email, the gentleman who approached me offered samples in return for a review, and requested a preliminary post - which is the purpose of this page. Obviously, I agreed and that left me looking for a project to build.

Usually, I have no problem dreaming up things to build but, I suppose because I had a commission of sorts, it took me a while to come up with one. I ended up searching the internet and found a prairie patio lantern at the Canadian Home Workshop website. The plan, by Paul Lewis and Bert Klassen, featured a copper roof and a faux frame and panel design. I really liked the idea however, like my late Aunt Mildred who couldn't cook a recipe without adding her own personality, I didn't care for the plan.

Here is a quick sketch of what I am proposing. If you following the link to Canadian Home Workshop, you will see that there are subtle differences in design - and no doubt there will be more before I am finished. Where the originators of the idea used copper for the roof, I prefer to shingle it using cedar shims instead of shakes. The original design called for extensive use of biscuit joinery, which I eschew for outdoor projects as I do not trust biscuits in that application. Instead, I will use full frame and panel style joinery to install the panels, although the panels themselves will be half lapped. Finally, I will add a GFCI protected outlet. Why? My house doesn't have any exterior outlets. Many times I need to plug things in outside and this lantern would provide the outlets without adding extra extension cords.

Once completed, the review will be posted in place of this page. In addition, I will be posting a set of plans - should you wish to build one of these lanterns yourself, dear reader - in the projects section of my web site.

I am very excited to try this new product. If you would like to learn more about Krylon Exterior Wood Stain Spray, visit their Save Our Saturdays web site. There you will find information about the product, a how to video showing it in use - along with their new spray head design, and you can enter a sweepstakes and win prizes, if that turns your crank. I never win anything so I never bother yet my mom buys 6-49 tickets all the time - she has never won anything either. Oh well. Hopefully, my samples will arrive soon. In the meantime, I an on the lookout for the nicest, straight grain cedar I can find. I want this project to really stand out! Happy woodworking.
